Nowadays, effective and continuing relations cannot be developed without promoting adequate infrastructure and logistics networks. Consequently, in accordance with the recent initiatives of the European Commission in this field, prime importance must be given to initiatives promoting above all intermodal transport of goods and maritime transport links between the European Union and its Mediterranean partner countries, as well as between these Mediterranean countries.

In order to achieve all this, it is necessary to have the contribution and collaboration of European suppliers or those of the Mediterranean area who can valorise the experience gained over recent years, in particular through various pilot projects, seminars and working groups that have been organised about Euromediterranean regional transport. It will also be important to identify new pilot projects, which will of course also require technical assistance to accompany their realisation. Obviously, this will also entail asking for assistance to support the necessary regulatory reforms, with particular emphasis on environmental management and the improvement of logistics processes for links between the various transport infrastructures.

Collaboration in the field of logistics also means providing Mediterranean countries with our technological advantage in the telecommunications sector, a basic component in the information society. Since 1998, the European telecommunications market has been freed of restrictions. It will now be of major importance to provide incentives for such agreements, in other words, to broaden the area of freedom in telecommunications, including involving the Mediterranean countries, in order to increasingly simplify communications and to promote more freedom of expression and hence more democracy in the region.
